Scooter's Story
Scooter was hit by a car and suffered a broken hind leg near the bus station. His owners were nearby and saw the tragedy, but did not have the funds to take him to the vet. A local animal advocate took him and arranged to have him sponsored by a nearby San Pancho rescue group, who paid for his care and boarding at a local Sayulita vet.

Unfortunately, the leg could not be saved and need to be amputated. Like many young dogs, being a “tripod” does not phase them and quickly they are playing and running happily as if nothing happened.
(Scooter now as a "Tri-pod")
Because Scooter tested positive for the tick-borne disease, Erhlichia (typical for any local dog what hasn’t had regular visits to a vet), he needed treatment to get his red blood cells up. One of our SDR founders fostered him until he was well enough to go north.

When Scooter was well enough, our local Sayulita spay/neuter clinic arranged to fly him to San Francisco, where he was delivered to the Family Dog Rescue while waiting for a permanent home. While there he unfortunately got kennel cough. (It’s cold in SF after being in Mx!) Scooter was not happy there.

A wonderful couple saw the above listing on the Family Dog Rescue website and decided to adopt him, even though he had medical issues. They took him to their own vet, and it was bad news. Luckily, one of the adopters, Beca, was training to be a nurse and called his Sayulita foster to see what could be done long-distance. His blood sugar was so dangerously low her local vet was certain he was going to die any minute. The foster took his blood tests to the local vet here, who immediately recognized — from extremely low RBC — that the Erhlichia had returned.
Note: Because Imidocarb is not available in the US, and that was the drug that was needed to treat his infected blood immediately, another dog lover traveling next day to SFO, took the meds, with syringes marked for measured amount, and after arrival went outside the SFO airport, met the adopters, handed them the tailor-made medical package.

(Nurse) Beca gave Scooter the needed two-week-apart shots, then took him back to another vet to confirm his life had been saved and levels were back to normal. Scooter (now “Cosmo") has not had a sick day since he was rescued in Sayulita, then saved again by the adopters in SFBA. Cosmo is a happy beloved lucky dog with Hazel, Dani & Beca.
